This new table saw is capable of detecting the human skin and stop/retract in 1/200th of a second. The safety system detects when someone accidentally contacts the spinning saw blade by detecting differences in electrical charges. The blade is continually monitored by a electronic components.
This technology is fascinating. I just can't imagine why someone hasn't thought of this already. I am also surprised that common miter saws are built to stop when the trigger or safety is released but table saws just keep spinning. Manufactures should at the very least use electronic braking to stop the blade on table saws too when the power is cut.
The company that makes this product is SawStop. It looks like they have a working prototype of a bandsaw and a chopsaw too! I can't wait for this technology to become more affordable.
The inventor of the technology Stephen Gass has had a long uphill battle with the industry. Surprisingly, the industry has not been very interested in this safety device. They think the safety bodies will change the regulations and require them to change existing equipment to use this technology. That could mean replacing thousands of dollars worth of equipment. Funny thing and good for all of us is that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommended that the government begin a “rulemaking process” that could result in mandatory safety standards for table saws. So, soon table saws in general may become safer.
