Remove the posts, concrete, and bricks left from home construction
Remove retaining wall railroad cross ties
Break up surface lumber
Dig out buried cross ties and landscape timbers
Smooth out ground in preparation for the 3 inch gravel under deck bed
Removal of the surface boards was pretty easy. The screws were removed from the perimeter. The deck screws were pretty rusted out, several did snap while being drilled out. It looks like the people who built the original deck used regular screws not stainless steel or galvanized. The surface boards could be simply pulled up because the nails offered very little resistance.
Once the surface was removed it was not to difficult to take the cordless circular saw and cut the framing boards along the posts. The post removal was more challenging. A hard whack on all four sides of the posts would fracture and break the concrete underground. Most of the posts then could be lifted out pretty easily. The concrete rubble came out with a little digging.
