Tips for Keeping Outdoor Tools Looking Like New Last Updated:[4/3/2007 5:56:18 PM]Any handyman knows that keeping his or her tools in tip top shape is critical to getting the job done, but when those tools must be stored outside it can be that much more difficult to keep them looking and performing like new year after year. Whether the issue is lack of storage space, or simply the size of the tools, some tools will undoubtedly have to be stored outside, where they will be subject to damage by wind, weather and other forces of nature. It is important, therefore, for homeowners and others to take the steps necessary to protect those outside tools as much as possible.
Perhaps the most important part of caring for outdoor tools properly is to keep them out of the weather as much as possible. Even if the tools cannot be kept under roof, there are steps homeowners can take to keep them away from wind, rain and other damaging elements as much as possible. One of the cheapest, and easiest, ways to protect those outdoor tools from weather damage is to invest in one or more tarps. These tarps are widely available at a variety of hardware stores, home improvement centers and even many department stores and discount retailers. Tarps are a low tech and low expense way to keep those tools protected. It is important, of course, to make sure the tarps are properly secured, and that the tools are completely covered. Placing the tools on a wooden pallet or other sturdy surface, and tying the tarp around them using bungee cords can help keep those tools protected from wind and weather.
In addition, it is of course a good idea to invest in some sort of rustproofing or rust retardant if metal tools are to be stored outside. Metal is very durable, but one of the biggest drawbacks is that it tends to rust easily if not protected properly. There are a number of preparations tool owners can apply to metal tools to help prevent the appearance of rust, and it is a good idea to spray on such protective coatings at least once a year. The staff at the local hardware store or home improvement center should be able to recommend a good product for rustproofing those outdoor tools.
If rust is detected, it is important that the surface be sanded down and the rust removed. After the surface has been repaired as much as possible, a good rust resistant primer should be sprayed on the tool. After the primer has dried a quality paint should be applied to provide further protection and enhance the appearance of the tool. Caring for outdoor tools in this way, and dealing with any problems promptly, is the best way to keep those tools working year after year.
