Last Updated:[4/3/2007 6:05:40 PM]

Whether you are an old hand at home improvements or a new homeowners discovering the joys of home repair projects, there are a number of tools that you need to have close at hand. Having a well stocked tool shed or tool kit will make those inevitable repair jobs a lot simpler, easier and less expensive.

Among the must have tools for any well equipped tool kit are the following items:

  • Claw hammer : A high quality claw hammer is perhaps the most basic of all household tools, and a myriad of home improvement and home repair projects will require its use. It is important to choose a hammer that is the proper weight, and it is also important to ensure that it has a good claw for removing nails as well as a good head for driving them.
  • Specialty hammers : While a good quality claw hammer is the basis of any good tool kit, there are a number of specialty hammers, each designed for a different set of tasks, that can be part of the tool kit as well. From ball peen hammers to rubber mallets, adding these specialty hammer to the tool kit can be quite beneficial.
  • A good set of screwdrivers : A quality set of screwdrivers, both Phillips head and regular slotted drivers, is another essential part of the well equipped toolbox. It is important to choose a variety of sizes, from large screwdrivers designed for equally large screws and bolts, to the tiny screwdrivers needed for repairing electronic equipment, household appliances and even eyeglasses.
  • An electric screwdriver with a variety of bits. While good old fashioned screwdrivers are a must have for any toolkit, there are times when they simply are not enough. For those times it is a good idea to have a quality rechargeable electric screwdriver on hand. These electric screwdrivers are great for those household jobs that require driving a large number of screws, and they can save homeowners a great deal of time.
  • A quality electric sander : A good quality sander is an essential piece of equipment when it comes time to repair a surface, repaint a piece of furniture, refinish a hardwood floor or do any other number of household chores and home repairs. A quality electric sander, with an assortment of sandpapers, should be part of any well equipped tool shed.
  • A good set of wrenches : Wrenches are an essential part of many home repairs, and it is a good idea for homeowners to accumulate a variety of wrenches, in a variety of different styles and sizes. There are of course many ready made wrench sets on the market, but if these are not appropriate wrenches can be easily accumulated piece by piece.

No matter how many or how few tools that home tool kit holds, it is important that the tools be well maintained, and that they be of the highest possible quality. High quality tools can last a lifetime, while inferior tools may need to be replaced every couple of years. It is much more cost effective in the long run to purchase the best tools you can afford; doing so will result in better projects and less frustration.
